Coral fishing was an important economic activity in the Mediterranean. Algeria was the main fishing area for corals, especially after the depletion of Sardinian coral, and ships from different countries competed for this valuable resource. Torre del Greco, near Naples, was the most important port town for coral fishing in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, while Livorno was the most important port town for coral fishing in the Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 1864, Torre del Greco had 300 coral-fishing boats while Livorno had 60.
