The title appears in the preamble of the text (fol. 1b, l. 20) and on the tail of the text block as "al-Sāmī fī al-asāmī".Physical description: 27 lines per page. Written in small naskh in black ink (faded to brown), with use of red for headings. Cream paper, glossy, with pulp and fivers visible. The pages have been trimmed so that parts of marginalia are cut off. Detailed table of contents in preamble (fol. 3a-b). Several inscriptions on fol. 1a, including verses of poetry in Arabic and Persian in praise of the book.Inscription in Arabic script in pencil on the pastedown of the upper cover: "Lughah 57".Collation: Paper, fol. 54 ; 1⁸ (-1, before fol. 1) 2-6⁸ 7⁸ (-1 at the end of quire).Origin: Copy completed on Saturday 1 ("fī ghurrah") Muḥarram 708 [June 1308] by Ṣāliḥ ibn Yaʻqūb al-Anqarī in al-Madrasah al-ṣār...īyah (colophon, fol. 54a).Incipit: الحمد لله الذى لا يتم امر دون حمده ولا يبلغ وصف كنه قدره ... وبعد فان الله تعالى ادخر لكل قرن فضيلهExplicit: ولاهما جميعًا صفحة الاغراض فعنان امره بيده تمت النشغة والله المستعان وعليه التكلان انه الملك الديان تكون فى جوف القلم مثل القطنة تم السامى في الاسامى - Decorated paper pasted on paper over paper pasteboards with brown leather spine and edges. Traces of a now wanting fore-edge and envelope flap. Paper pastedowns. - Treatise in four parts (qism) dedicated to Abū al-Barakāt ʻAlī ibn Masʻūd ibn Ismāʻīl (see preamble, fol. 1b, l. 14), explaining words used in several matters (sharʻīyāt; ḥayawānāt;ʻulwīyāt; suflīyāt), often by giving their Persian equivalent. The treatise was completed on 14 Ramaḍān 497 [June 10, 1104] (see end of text, fol. 54a, l. 1-2). This copy also contains on the margins a gloss on the text, entitled al-Ibānah (see note fol. 54b). The text is followed on fol. 54b by a list of words with the same consonant skeleton susceptible of having three different meanings depending on the vocalization, with interlinear Persian translation.
