Written in medium small naskh (professional hand) in black ink with use of red. Soft cream paper, glossy, with laid and chain lines visible. Fol. 9-12 are later replacements on European paper. The commented text is written in red on the margins. Marginal annotations on the beginning of the text, apparently by the same hand as the main text. Several inscriptions on fol. (ii)b and 1a. Table of contents by a later hand on fol. (ii)a. Leaves apparently wanting between fol. 6 and 7, fol. 61 and 62. Catchword on the verso of the last fol. of each quire (quaternions).Origin: Copy completed on Friday, 14 Rabīʻ al-Ākhar 808 [Oct. 9, 1405] in Samarqand in the mausoleum? of Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī by Jalāl ibn ...? (colophon, fol. 475a).Inscription in red pencil in Arabic script on a label pasted on the upper cover: "...? 34". Inscription in black ink in Arabic script on a label pasted on the pastedown of the upper cover: "Ḥ 902". Inscription in black ink in Arabic numerals on the pastedown of the upper cover: "196".Incipit: الحمد لله الذي انزل القران كلاما مؤلفا منظما ونزله بحسب المصالح منجما وجعله بالتحميد مفتتحا ... [2أ] ... اعلم ان متن كل علم وعمود كل صناعة طبقات العلماء فيهExplicit: الى البيت المعمور حشو ذلك النور ملايكه يصلون عليه حتى يستيقظ والله اعلم بالصواب واليه المرجع والماب - Dark brown leather for upper and lower covers, fore-edge flap and envelope flap. Upper and lower covers are similarly blind stamped and tooled with a central mandorla with pendants on the vertical axis, an outer border consisting of fillets, and corner pieces. Yellow paper pastedowns. - First volume of Zamakhsharī's commentary of the Qurʼān, comprising the text from Sūrat al-Fātiḥah to Sūrat al-Kahf.
