The title appears in the preamble of the text as: "Kitāb al-Nihāyah fī gharīb al-ḥadīth wa-al-athar" (fol. 5a, l. 3), and in the final colophon as "al-Nihāyah fī gharīb lughāt al-ḥadīth wa-alfāẓ al-riwāyah".Incipit: الحمد لله على نعمه بجميع محامده واثنى عليه بالاية فى بادى الامر وعايده ... اما بعد فلا خلاف بين اولى الالباب والعقول ولا ارتياب عند ذوى المعارف والمحصول ان علم الحديث والآثار من اشرف العلوم الاسلاميةExplicit: فى كتاب النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم لاقوال شبوة ذكر ييعث هى بفتح الياء الاولى وضمّ العين المهملة صقع من بلاد اليمن جعله لهم آخر كتاب النهاية فى غريب الحديث والاثر والحمد لله اولا وآخرا وصلوته على سيدنا محمد النبى الامى وآله الطاهرين وصحبهPhysical description: 25 lines per page. Written in medium small naskh in black ink with use of red for headings and entries. The entries are repeated in red on the margin. Thin light cream paper with laid lines visible. Title on tail of text block (hardly legible).Origin: Copied by Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Sarakhsī, from a copy copied from an exemplar copied from an autograph (colophon Juzʼ1, fol. 177b). Part 1 completed on Saturday 8 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 879 [April 15, 1475] (colophon Juzʼ 1, fol. 177b, with the name of the copyist reading: Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Naẓām al-Sarakhsī). Part 2 completed in Herat on 29 Ramaḍān 880 [January 26, 1476] (colophon Juzʼ 2, fol. 397a). - Marbled paper pasted on paper pasteboards for upper and lower covers. Spine, fore-edge flap and edges in golden brown leather. Envelope flap wanting. Several inscriptions on the paper pastedowns. - Lexicon of difficult words used in traditions and hadiths, in three parts arranged in alphabetical order, written for Ghiyāth al-Dawlah wa-al-Dīn Khwājah ʻĀdil Shāh (see colophon, fol. 581a).
